The COVID-19 pandemic has forced nonprofit leaders to make challenging decisions quickly – and more critical choices loom on the horizon. Dean of the UCLA Anderson School of Management Tony Bernardo, CEO of A Better Chicago Beth Swanson and Director of Philanthropic Advisory Services Marguerite Griffin join Wealth Management CIO Katie Nixon for a discussion on how nonprofits continue to work toward their missions in the current environment.

Dean Antonio Bernardo is the 9th dean of UCLA Anderson School of Management, and also holds the John E. Anderson Chair in Management. He became dean on July 1, 2019. Dean Bernardo joined the Anderson faculty in 1994 as a professor of management in the school’s finance area, and has a long history as an active and engaged member of Anderson’s faculty and administration, having served as department chair and senior associate dean for academic affairs from 2006 to 2009, and finance area chair from 2013 to 2015 and again in 2019. During his quarter century at Anderson, it’s estimated that he’s taught more than 5,000 students -- a fact he describes as an honor. His reputation as a teacher is highly distinguished and he has earned numerous teaching and leadership awards. In addition to teaching at UCLA, Dean Bernardo has also taught at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, and the India School of Business in Hyderabad. Dean Bernardo also held a visiting appointment at the University of Chicago. He has published numerous articles in leading finance, economics and law journals, and has served as associate editor of the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Financial Research, Critical Finance Review and Financial Management. Born and raised in Canada, he earned his bachelor’s in economics from the University of Western Ontario and a doctorate in economics from Stanford University.

Beth Swanson

A Better Chicago


Beth Swanson is A Better Chicago’s CEO. Prior to joining the team, Beth was the vice president of strategy and programs at the Joyce Foundation. At Joyce, she oversaw an annual grant portfolio of $50 million, provided strategic direction to all programs and drove foundation-wide innovation initiatives. Beth had previously served as Deputy for Education in the administration of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, working collaboratively with education and community leaders to define the city’s education policy agenda from birth through college. Earlier in her career, Beth was executive director of the Pritzker Traubert Family Foundation and worked at Chicago Public Schools with CEO Arne Duncan as director of the Office of Extended Learning Opportunities and then leading the district’s Office of Management and Budget. Beth is vice chair of the City Colleges Board of Trustees, board chair for Thrive Chicago, and serves on the Illinois P-20 Council. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English and American studies from Amherst College and a master’s in public policy from the University of Chicago.

Katie Nixon
Chief Investment Officer, Wealth Management

Katie is an Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer for the Wealth Management business at Northern Trust. In that capacity, Katie leads the national investment management practice for Northern Trust’s Wealth Management business from the firm’s Chicago headquarters. Her responsibilities include investment policy development with a particular focus on portfolio construction and implementation. She also directs the investment management activities of over 200 Northern Trust portfolio managers across the firm’s 60+ Wealth Management offices. Katie sits on the Firm’s Investment Policy Committee and Tactical Asset Allocation Committee, and she chairs the Wealth Management Investment Advisory Committee. Katie was selected as one of Private Asset Management’s ‘50 Most Influential Women in Private Wealth’ for 2016.

Prior to joining Northern Trust, Ms. Nixon worked at U.S. Trust Company for eighteen years in several investment related capacities, including Managing Director and Division Manager in the Wealth Management Division in New York, overseeing a group of portfolio managers and client service officers with total combined assets under management in excess of $7 Billion. Ms. Nixon also served on US Trust's Portfolio Policy Committee as well as the Private Equity Investment Committee.

Katie received her B.A. from Wellesley College and her M.B.A. in Finance from New York University, Stern School of Business where she graduated with distinction, Beta Gamma Sigma, and was a Stern Scholar. She has received the designations of both Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA®) and Certified Private Wealth Advisor (CPWA®) from the Investment Management Consultants Association. Further, she has been awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, and is also a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts and the Investment Management Consultants Association (IMCA).

Marguerite Griffin
Director, Philanthropic Advisory Services

Marguerite H. Griffin is a Senior Vice President at Northern Trust. As Director of Philanthropic Advisory Services, Marguerite is responsible for the delivery and growth of Northern Trust's philanthropic advisory services to Wealth Management clients. She specializes in administering charitable trusts and private foundations and facilitating family philanthropy retreats. She also advises clients regarding impact investing, strategic philanthropy, international philanthropy, family succession planning and board development, governance and risk management for nonprofit organizations.

Marguerite was most recently a Senior Trust Administrator and Relationship Manager in the Personal Trust Administration Department where she was responsible for the administration of large, complex trusts for individuals and families, charitable trusts and private foundations. Her duties involved working with sophisticated estate plans, sensitive family situations and complex property transfers.

Prior to joining Northern Trust as a Vice President in November 1999, Marguerite was a Vice President and Trust Administrator within the Private Clients Division of First Chicago, Bank One. Before joining First Chicago, Bank One, she practiced law as an Associate with Vedder, Price, Kaufman & Kammholz where she specialized in estate planning, nonprofit organization law, charitable trusts and private foundations.

Marguerite received a B.A. degree from Washington University in St. Louis and a J.D. degree from Northwestern University School of Law.

Marguerite is a member of the American Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Chicago Council on Planned Giving and the Chicago Estate Planning Council. Marguerite is admitted to practice before the Illinois Supreme Court.

Marguerite specializes in administering charitable trusts, private foundations and other tax-exempt entities. She is a sought-after speaker in the areas of impact investing, strategic philanthropy, board development, managing private foundations and family legacy philanthropy.

Marguerite is an active volunteer, advisor and board member with several charitable and cultural institutions, including Aeris, the Art Institute of Chicago, Audubon Great Lakes, Chicago Foundation for Women, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Chicago Community Trust, Forefront, The Ravinia Festival and WTTW/WFMT.
