Katie Nixon Chief Investment Officer, Wealth Management Northern Trust

Katie is an Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer for the Wealth Management business at Northern Trust. In that capacity, Katie leads the national investment management practice for Northern Trust’s Wealth Management business from the firm’s Chicago headquarters. Her responsibilities include investment policy development with a particular focus on portfolio construction and implementation. She also directs the investment management activities of over 200 Northern Trust portfolio managers across the firm’s 60+ Wealth Management offices. Katie sits on the Firm’s Investment Policy Committee and Tactical Asset Allocation Committee, and she chairs the Wealth Management Investment Advisory Committee. Katie was selected as one of Private Asset Management’s ‘50 Most Influential Women in Private Wealth’ for 2016.

Prior to joining Northern Trust, Ms. Nixon worked at U.S. Trust Company for eighteen years in several investment related capacities, including Managing Director and Division Manager in the Wealth Management Division in New York, overseeing a group of portfolio managers and client service officers with total combined assets under management in excess of $7 Billion. Ms. Nixon also served on US Trust's Portfolio Policy Committee as well as the Private Equity Investment Committee.

Katie received her B.A. from Wellesley College and her M.B.A. in Finance from New York University, Stern School of Business where she graduated with distinction, Beta Gamma Sigma, and was a Stern Scholar. She has received the designations of both Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA®) and Certified Private Wealth Advisor (CPWA®) from the Investment Management Consultants Association. Further, she has been awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, and is also a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts and the Investment Management Consultants Association (IMCA).

Kevin Sowers President, Johns Hopkins Health System EVP, Johns Hopkins Medicine

Kevin W. Sowers, M.S.N., R.N., F.A.A.N., is president of the Johns Hopkins Health System and executive vice president of Johns Hopkins Medicine.

As the second person in Johns Hopkins history to hold these dual roles, Mr. Sowers oversees the health system’s six hospitals – The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Howard County General Hospital, Suburban Hospital, Sibley Memorial Hospital and Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital – and sets strategies that advance our mission to deliver outstanding care, train the next generation of leaders and advance research and discovery. He also serves as chair of Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, which has more than 40 primary and specialty care outpatient sites throughout Maryland and the Washington, D.C., area.

Mr. Sowers came to Johns Hopkins Medicine after 32 years with the Duke University Health System, the last eight as president and CEO of Duke University Hospital.

He joined Duke University Medical Center Hospital in 1985 as a staff nurse in oncology and held several faculty and nursing leadership positions. His numerous senior leadership posts across the Duke University Health System included chief operating officer for Duke University Hospital and interim CEO for Durham Regional Hospital. Among his senior administrative roles, Mr. Sowers oversaw consolidation of Duke’s clinical lab services, emergency and trauma services, and managed care and patient care services.

Active in many professional and community organizations, Mr. Sowers is a member of the Vizient board of directors and the AAMC Council of Teaching Hospitals and Health Systems administrative board. He served as chair of the AmSurg board and was a member of the North Carolina Hospital Association board of trustees and the North Carolina Institute of Medicine board of directors. He also held leadership roles with the American Heart Association, Susan G. Komen and the Oncology Nursing Society.

Sowers earned his bachelor of science degree from Capital University School of Nursing and a master of science from Duke University School of Nursing. He is an American Academy of Nursing fellow and has collaborated on numerous research efforts as well as consulted internationally. He has published extensively and speaks nationally and abroad on issues such as leadership, organizational change, mentorship and cancer care.

Lisa Maragakis, MD, MPH, FSHEA, FIDSA Johns Hopkins Health System Senior Director of Healthcare Epidemiology and Infection Prevention

Lisa Maragakis is an Associate Professor of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she received her medical degree and post-doctoral Infectious Diseases training and a master’s degree in public health from The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. She serves as Senior Director for Healthcare Epidemiology and Infection Prevention for the Johns Hopkins Health System in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Maragakis is the Executive Director of the Biocontainment Unit at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. She serves as Co-Chair of the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and as Co-Chair for the 2020 update of the SHEA-IDSA Compendium of Strategies to Prevent Healthcare Associated Infections. Her research interests integrate infection prevention, human factors engineering, implementation science, and mathematical modeling approaches to develop new interventions to prevent the transmission of high-consequence pathogens in healthcare settings.

Jennifer Nuzzo, DrPH, SM Senior Scholar, Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Health and Engineering & Department of Epidemiology Bloomberg School of Public Health

Dr. Nuzzo is a Senior Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security and an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering and the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. An epidemiologist by training, her work focuses on global health security, with a particular focus on outbreak detection and response, health systems as they relate to global health security, international and domestic biosurveillance, and infectious disease diagnostics. She directs the Outbreak Observatory, which conducts, in partnership with front-line public health practitioners, operational research to improve outbreak preparedness and response. Together with colleagues from the Nuclear Threat Initiative and the Economist Intelligence Unit, she co-leads the development of the first-ever Global Health Security Index, which benchmarks 195 countries’ public health and healthcare capacities and capabilities, their commitment to international norms and global health security financing, and socioeconomic, political, and environmental risk environments. Previously, she has conducted research related to the Affordable Care Act, tuberculosis control, foodborne outbreaks, and water security. Dr. Nuzzo is an Associate Editor of the peer-reviewed journal Health Security.

In addition to her work at the Center, Dr. Nuzzo has advised national governments and nonprofit organizations. She has served as a consultant to the National Biosurveillance Advisory Subcommittee, as a member of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s National Drinking Water Advisory Council (NDWAC), and as a member of the NDWAC’s Water Security Working Group. She has also served as a project advisor for the American Water Works Association Research Foundation (now called the Water Research Foundation), a primary funding organization for drinking water research in the United States. She has also been consulted on pandemic planning efforts in the Republic of Indonesia and Taiwan.

Dr. Nuzzo joined the Center at its founding in 2003, and she has served as an Analyst, Senior Analyst, and Scholar. Prior to joining the Center, she served as a Research Analyst with the Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
In 2002 and 2003, Dr. Nuzzo worked as a public health epidemiologist for the City of New York, where she was involved with disease and syndromic surveillance efforts related to the city’s Waterborne Disease Risk Assessment Program. Central to her duties in New York was the management of the city’s drug sale monitoring program for surveillance of diarrheal illness. She also worked on a local climate change initiative for the City of Cambridge, MA.

Dr. Nuzzo received a DrPH in epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, an SM in environmental health from Harvard University, and a BS in environmental sciences from Rutgers University.
